What direct access means.
You can generally begin treatment with a licensed physical therapist without first obtaining a physician’s referral, when the care is within the therapist’s scope and the legal conditions are met.
There are limits to know about.
Under California law, treatment beyond 45 calendar days or 12 visits, whichever occurs first, generally requires the appropriate clinician’s dated approval of the physical therapist’s plan of care following an in-person or telehealth examination. Your therapist will discuss any referral or coordination needed for your situation.
Insurance is a separate question.
Direct access does not guarantee insurance coverage. Your plan may have its own referral, authorization, or payment requirements. Check with the practice and your insurer before care.
